It was an honour that RPM Sports Management trusted timingsense&#8217;s timing technology for two such important events. The Barcelona Marathon, <em>La Marat\u00f3<\/em>, has a popular spirit and is considered the oldest marathon in the Iberian Peninsula. In its first edition in 1978, 185 runners took part: a far cry from the 15,000 participants we had to time on 7 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/salida.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40920\" width=\"797\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/salida.jpeg 1063w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/salida-768x510.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Great participation and large audience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge itself was both the number of runners, for which it was necessary to set up 11 intermediate points, and to provide data and results in real time to: iRewind, Marathon-Photos, Canal Deporte TV, Eurosport, TV3 and Todotrofeo. Cop\u00e9rnico also had to feed the Live app with more than 18,000 users, 10,000 of them recurring at some moments of the race: in less than 2 seconds, users received notifications of the athletes they were following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any race of this magnitude has unique and special needs: the first was that the Barcelona City Council, in its concern for the environment, requested that the timing be done with a recoverable, non-disposable chip. This could be part of the challenge, but no, the timingsense clip chip was the perfect product for the purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/clip.jpeg\" alt=\"Clip chip\" class=\"wp-image-40908\" width=\"506\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/clip.jpeg 1012w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/clip-300x226.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/clip-768x579.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For timing so many timingpoints during a day where we also had many other races, we chose to hire other companies, timingsense customers in that region: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cronoexagon.com\/\">CronoExagon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lasttiming.es\/\">LASTTiming<\/a> were in charge of setting up 6 timingpoints, while we took care of the start\/finish and the other 5 timingpoints. We used more than 50 UHF timing devices to cover the widths required by the organisation &#8211; the reading rates are spectacular!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1356\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/lecturas.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/lecturas.png 1356w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/lecturas-768x103.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1356px) 100vw, 1356px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Scalability and data service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All the devices were connected to the new TSCloud, released to just two months before the race. The new TSCloud is not based on a traditional server architecture but on microservices in Azure: Microsoft is in charge of scaling and executing resources in the event of increased use of the services. This makes the new TSCloud much more resilient and cost-effective than the previous one: all advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cloud sent the readings to <a href=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/en\/timing-software-copernico-lp\/?internal_campaign=ENblog_link\">Cop\u00e9rnico, our timing software<\/a>. We didn&#8217;t create a section for each checkpoint because we didn&#8217;t need the rankings at km 18 and 28: these checkpoints were set up to catch cheaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/splits.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40916\" width=\"928\" height=\"658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/splits.png 1237w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/splits-768x544.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to serve the data to all companies in real time, we use Cop\u00e9rnico presets: a preset is a graphical and easy way to represent a set of data: a list of columns, sorted by one or more fields and with filters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cop\u00e9rnico exports each preset in a url so that other companies can consume it and display the data. In this way, a timer with no programming knowledge can configure a set of data to be consumed from a url in a graphical and very easy way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/batllo-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/batllo-1.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/timingsense.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/batllo-1-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Live App to communicate with the participants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the <a href=\"https:\/\/timingsense.com\/en\/live-timing-app\/?internal_campaign=ENblog_link\">Live app<\/a>, it&#8217;s not complicated for a race like this, once you set up the app in Cop\u00e9rnico during the race there&#8217;s not much else to do.
